About Us & Sustainability

We have been letting holiday property and longer stay properties in Yorkshire since 2004 and our guests' experience suggests that we have got it right.

We have lived in the locality all our married lives and are grateful for our customers’ positive feedback over the years, allowing us to continually develop your holiday experience. We want you to return home having had a relaxed but fulfilling holiday.

'Yorkshire born and bred' - farming locally, and running the family business in Hull, means we have a good knowledge of the area. The East Riding's unique attractions are still too much of a secret: we are doing our bit to change that! The locality offers the best of town and country. Getting here and getting about is easy: we are quickly onto the motorway network and the low level of traffic in the area, is just one more of the plus points. The peace and quiet of the Wolds attract our customers from far and wide, and we look forward to welcoming you too.

Sustainability

All our staff live locally, and we provide jobs for 6 people not including garden help.

Our laundry is all done on site: 0 miles.

We use local trades from the village.

We ask visitors to manage their rubbish carefully to reduce impact on landfill.

We are including solar panels on our new accessible cottage with electricity feeding into the national grid.

Testimonials

This was the most wonderful holiday let. Placed slap bang in the middle of a delightful village, with superb walks right from the door and the benefit of a truly remarkable garden to wander through. For us, location was key and this was certainly so. Quiet, yet with lots for us to explore and see and central to many places to visit such as Bempton cliffs….a sheer delight….Beverley, The Wolds Falconry Centre, The North Cave Wetlands. Despite the troubled and difficult times for cottage owners, Louise had done everything she could to make the stay as ‘normal’ as possible with helpful notes all over the cottage. She was most helpful and courteous when answering my many and varied questions. There is everything you want in this most comfortable and well equipped let. We can highly recommend it.

Completing on my house sale four days before the Covid19 Lockdown was put in place in the UK was incredibly lucky – but the country I was moving to had already closed its borders and I was left stranded. Staying with relatives or friends for a few days is one thing – but landing on them for a long but unspecified stretch of time, knowing that everyone would be stuck inside for 23 hours a day is something else.

Fortunately, I found Bay Tree Cottage on the internet and sent a message asking if I could come at short notice, for a month? A prompt response in the affirmative was the result, and so I came to stay in this delightful little house.

It was the perfect sanctuary for me, all I could possibly want was there, from every kitchen utensil under the sun to an excellent wifi connection. The comfortable bedroom overlooked a neighbour’s magnolia tree that went from bare to bud, then full flower to leafy canopy, as the weeks wore on. The spacious bathroom had a bath and a shower with plenty of hot water and reliable water pressure. In the cosy living room there was a dining table and a desk as well as an alcove cupboard stocked up with books and games. As it was Lockdown I was unable to take advantage of the large collection of leaflets informing guests of local places of interest, but I could sit in the very private garden at the rear of the house to top up my vitamin D and go for a stroll around the village and its environs which are varied, attractive and well worth exploring. I think I had been there a fortnight before I found myself repeating a walk, so many possibilities exist in that small space.

My hosts, Louise and Tom, were kindness personified and regularly came to check up on me from a safe distance. There were no major problems to deal with but a couple of minor glitches (one with the wifi and one involving an over zealous swarm of wasps attempting to nest in the garden area) were dealt with immediately and efficiently.

Bay Tree Cottage was my sanctuary, so it will always have a place in my heart. And the next time I manage to get back to see friends and family, I know where I’ll be hoping to stay.

Horseshoe Cottage is a wonderfully traditional Yorkshire Cottage, nestled on the southern edge of the Yorkshire Wolds. It is in a truly fantastic location to enjoy all that the area has to offer, with particularly easy access to the Yorkshire Wolds Way and the nearby villages of North and South Cave and Hotham. The cottage itself is kept immaculately by its owners, Tom and Louise, has convenient off road parking, a useful outbuilding as well as a private BBQ area. I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone seeking to enjoy the beauty of the East Riding countryside, whether by foot, bike or car.

Just a short email to say what an amazing time we are having at Bay Tree Cottage! From the moment we arrived to find fresh flowers, homemade shortbread and wonderful toiletries, we knew this place was going to be special.

Your kindness and hard work is very much appreciated. The cottage is spotless and has everything and more one needs for a relaxing self catering break. We feel very spoilt on Fridays when we have fresh bedding and a beautiful shiny clean cottage. You have been so accommodating and friendly towards us, and we are so thankful that Bay Tree Cottage was available as a ‘home from home’ for us while our new house is being finished.

We tell all our friends and family what a wonderful time we are having, and about the excellent customer service from The Martin family… nothing is too much trouble, thank you again.

The customer service received in respect of Horseshoe Cottage, Nordham has been superlative during my stay. The cottage is very well appointed with many added extras such as wifi and a television in the master bedroom. The owners, Tom and Louise, are very attentive and have been quick to remedy any faults, although these are few and far between. Overall I would highly recommend Horseshoe Cottage to any prospective customers.

Thanks for your cottages over our wedding week, they were perfect and I know the family enjoyed their stay very much. We even used the lounge to practice our first dance!

Accessibility and inclusivity information

We are extremely excited to share the news about our new accessible property:

The Old Stables had it’s first customers in June ‘23. We are proud to have worked with a renowned architect on the project, transforming stone buildings into a spacious open plan cottage with one fully accessible bedroom with ensuite wet room. The other bedroom with ensuite bathroom has its own entrance, suitable for a private carer, or as a twin or super-king room. The Old Stables is special with 2 sets of bifold doors from the kitchen and the sitting room making the property open with direct access to the sensory garden: an accessible retreat in carefully planned surroundings.

The south facing sensory garden is private with planting specially chosen to entice the senses, a water feature adding to the ambiance. The garden with “easy travel” resin gravel, is elevated from the land beyond with a stunning backdrop of trees in the distance. Provision of covered shade for sitting out of the heat, a necessity with climate change.

The covered, lit drive-in garage has immediate access to the front door.
